ELIO D’ALESSIO

FOUNDING PARTNER

A founding partner of D’Alessio Romero Law Firm, Elio obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree in Economics from York University, earned his law degree from The University of Manchester School of Law, attended The University of Toronto Faculty of Law and was called to the Ontario Bar.

Elio’s practice is devoted to all areas family law, wills and estates, serious personal injury claims (motor vehicle accidents and slip and falls) and denials of short-term and long-term disability claims.

Elio represents a broad spectrum of low to high net worth clients in intricate family law disputes, dealing with complex parenting, custody, property and support issues. He understands that litigation is one method of resolving a dispute and appreciates the practicality of alternative dispute resolution and its effectiveness in achieving a fair and equitable resolution in a cost-effective manner.

Elio’s clients benefit from his ability to represent them equally well in all levels of court and tribunals by focusing on providing them with exceptional legal representation in a proficient, cost-effective and compassionate manner where he works with them to move from a position of conflict to resolution.

Elio speaks fluent Italian and in his spare time enjoys travelling with his family, playing ice hockey, golf, scuba diving and cycling.

ROBERT H. ROMERO

MANAGING PARTNER

A founding partner of D’Alessio Romero Law Firm, Robert successfully represented his clients charged under the Provincial Offences Act and Canadian Criminal Code (summary conviction offences) in the Province of Ontario from 1992 to 1995.  Since then, Robert developed a passion for helping victims receive all  reasonable and necessary medical and rehabilitation treatment along with fair compensation for their injuries and losses.

Robert has become a well-respected, experienced and skilled negotiator, who vigorously advocates on behalf of his clients’ claims with respect to Slip and Falls, Canada Pension Disability Appeals, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and Short-Term or Long-Term Disability Benefits.  Robert’s main focus is on Statutory Accident Benefits, representing his clients at proceedings before the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an adjudicative tribunal that is part of the Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario (SLASTO).

As a P1 Paralegal Licensee, in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, Robert is legally licensed and experienced to provide legal services in Ontario. Robert’s high level of commitment, dedication, professionalism and energy transcends into his work and the successful representation of his clients.

In 2019, Robert successfully completed the Family Mediation Training Program (Family Law, Screening for Power Imbalances Including Family Violence, Basic Family Mediation, Family Relations and Advanced Family Mediation courses) through Riverdale Mediation Training.

Robert and his partners are members of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) and fully support OTLA’s objectives and initiates to improve Access to Justice across Ontario and to promote and lobby for full and fair protection of the rights of those who have suffered injury and losses.

JAMES M. GALAN

PARTNER

Mr. Galan is a courtroom litigator who provides fair, aggressive and professional representation to individuals who are injured by the negligence of others.  He has recovered millions of dollars for his clients.

Mr. Galan’s practice focuses primarily on injury insurance claims, including motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall injuries, long-term disability claims.  He is responsible for the firm’s employment law division.

Mr. Galan was awarded the Ontario Scholar Award by the Province of Ontario, prior to obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus.  He studied Spanish at the University of Malaga and the University of Havana.  He obtained a United States and Canadian Law degree at Michigan State University, College of Law and University of Ottawa Law School. At Michigan State University, he was awarded the Jurisprudence Achievement Award for that school’s Competitive Negotiation Class.

Mr. Galan appeared at hundreds of Superior Court matters. He regularly appears at contested and uncontested motions, including the Court of Appeal and as lead counsel at a personal injury Jury Trial. Among his achievements, he won against an insurance company that tried to prevent his client from obtaining compensation when his client was injured outside Canada (Iglesias v. Brown, 2009 CanLII 41360 (ON SC)). The Court ordered the Insurance company to pay the plaintiff’s costs. He won against an insurance company that attempted to transfer his clients’ cases to another jurisdiction to obtain a tactical advantage. The Court ordered the Insurance company to pay Mr. Galan’s costs (Chen et al. v. Ji, 2013 ONSC 7408). He won against an insurance company that attempted to prejudice his clients’ right to a fair trial (Guo v. Ji, 2013 ONSC 7684 (CanLII). The Court ordered the Insurance company to pay Mr. Galan’s costs. Mr. Galan’s firm won against a Defendant that improperly delayed his client’s case for compensation (Duong et. al. v. Lopez, CV-11-428239).  The Court ordered the Defendant to pay Mr. Galan’s costs. Mr. Galan’s firm won another motion where his firm secured a $3,500 cost award against a defendant insurer. Mr. Galan has also won his seventh consecutive Tribunal Hearing.  The D’Alessio Romero trial team was successful as an Intervenor when an Insurer sought to potentially prejudice our client at trial (Aviva v. Wawanesa, 2018 ONSC 5779).  The Court ordered costs against the Insurer (Aviva v. Wawanesa, 2018 ONSC 7030).   On April 2019, the D’Alessio Romero trial team was successful again when the Court awarded the Plaintiff costs against a self-insured defendant for improperly refusing questions at examination for discovery.

Recent Victories

  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $1,750,000 victory.  The client sustained chronic pain and a concussion as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $1,250,000 victory.  The client sustained chronic pain and psychological injuries as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a Seven figure victory.  The client sustained chronic pain and a concussion as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $1,075,000 victory days before an Arbitration.  The client sustained a possible conversion disorder as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in an $875,000 victory.  The client sustained psychological injuries and chronic pain as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $660,000 victory.  The client sustained orthopaedic injuries and chronic pain as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $570,000 victory for a client who sustained orthopaedic injuries and chronic pain as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $425,000 victory.  The elderly client sustained chronic pain and psychological disorders as a result of a motor vehicle collision.
  • Mr. Galan litigated a client’s case resulting in a $377,000 victory.  The client sustained chronic pain as a result of a motor vehicle collision.

EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH:

Giovanna is a lawyer with a sole and dedicated focus on Family Law.

Giovanna is the current and active founding partner of Cacciola Family Law located in Richmond Hill, Ontario and is affiliated with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm as Counsel to the firm’s Family Law Department.

With over 14 years’ of experience practicing Family Law, Giovanna represents a wide range of clients dealing with all facets of a marriage or relationship breakdown. Giovanna regularly deals with complex financial issues involving corporations, trusts, and tax issues. Giovanna also has extensive experience dealing with children’s issues, arguably the most important aspect of Family Law.  Giovanna approaches these issues with the utmost of care and consideration for the children’s best interests and how those interests can be met both currently and in the long term.

Giovanna practiced at Epstein Cole, the country’s largest Family Law firm, for over a decade, before deciding to move her practice to the York region.

Giovanna will negotiate, mediate, arbitrate or litigate depending on the specific needs of each client and circumstances of each case.

Giovanna is results oriented, has a strong sense of fairness and justice, and works tirelessly towards resolving her clients’ matters to their satisfaction.

EDUCATION:

Giovanna obtained her law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School after completing an Honours degree in Environmental Studies at York University.  Giovanna was called to the bar in 2004.

Giovanna has authored and assisted with a range of papers and book chapters, as well as researched a number of family law topics, dealing with such issues as: custody and access assessments; matrimonial property; procedure; spousal support; tax issues; mediation and arbitration; criminal matters that overlap with family law matters; estate matters that overlap with family law matters; parallel parenting; same sex marriage; retroactive support; and calculation of income for support purposes. Giovanna also extensively researched the effect of Parent Information Programs on the litigation process in the Family Courts while a student at Osgoode Hall Law School.

LAURA M. SGOTTO

LAWYER – PRACTISING IN ASSOCIATION

Laura works in association with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree from the University of Toronto and attended Law School at the University of Westminster.  After completing her law degree in the United Kingdom, Laura attended Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar.

Her main areas of practice focus on residential and commercial real estate transactions. Before joining D’Alessio Romero Law Firm, Laura gained invaluable experience as a summer student at a well-known Bay Street law firm and completed her articles at a mid-town full service boutique law firm. These experiences have given her insight to areas of Real Estate, Condominium Law and Civil Litigation.  Laura has appeared before Administrative Tribunals and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Small Claims Court.

Laura speaks fluent Italian and in  her spare time, she enjoys traveling, scuba diving and spending time with family.

ANTHONY MATIYA

LAWYER – PRACTISING IN ASSOCIATION

Anthony works in association with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm. He completed his Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science and Business from York University and attended The University of Westminster’s Law School where he obtained his law degree.

Anthony has experience in personal injury, occupier’s liability, insurance disputes, and real estate law. He has advocated and appeared at motions and hearings at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Small Claims Court and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

Anthony brings his experience in motor vehicle accident, slip and fall and long-term disability cases to the firm.  He handles his files with diligence, proficiency and empathy for each of his client’s special needs. Anthony’s skills and broad experience in the area of personal injury litigation are of considerable value to the firm and his clients.

Anthony speaks Arabic fluently and is a member of the Ontario Bar Association and the Canadian Bar association.

PATRICK MYERS

LAWYER

Patrick is an Associate Lawyer with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm.  He obtained his Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours degree, and attended Law School, at the University of Ottawa.

Patrick’s primary areas of practice focus on plaintiff personal injury litigation. Before practicing law, Patrick worked various roles in the security industry and credits his approach on the law to his experiences in security. Further, the combined experience of security and personal injury litigation has provided Patrick with insight into the impact that an injury has on the lives of his clients and the challenges faced by victims of personal injury. Through this experience, Patrick brings a compassionate and sympathetic approach to the firm’s clients.

Outside of the office, Patrick enjoys spending his spare time cooking, working out, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. Currently, Patrick’s favorite destination is the white sandy beaches of Barbados.

WILLIAM MUIR

LAWYER

William is an Associate Lawyer with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm. He completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours degree in Economics at Dalhousie University and completed his Master of Arts in Economics and Juris Doctor at University of Toronto. While at law school, he was awarded the Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP course prize for Canadian Income Tax Law and served as Co-Editor-In-Chief of Volume 73 of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review.

His main areas of practice are civil litigation and personal injury. Before joining D’Alessio Romero Law, William worked at a plaintiff-side civil litigation firm in Toronto where he represented clients in a wide range of matters and from all walks of life.

Outside of the office, William enjoys promoting access to justice and has founded a startup to develop a mobile app to help people enter into and negotiate flexible legal agreements.

FRED TONELLI

STUDENT-AT-LAW

Fred works as an Articling student with D’Alessio Romero Law Firm. He completed his Bachelor of Arts majoring in History at the University of Toronto. He then studied at the University of Windsor, where he earned his law degree. Fred anticipates being called to the Ontario Bar in June 2020.

In his spare time, Fred enjoys playing ice hockey, cycling, reading, and travel.
